Barenjager was discovered in the 15th century in East Prussia when bear hunters of the medieval European forests would lure bears out by leaving mead-like moonshine made from honey around. Soon it became professionally made and distributed. In the early 18th century the recipe was slightly updated yet is still made with highly aromatic pure honey. Today a German company continues production in a traditional manner. Enjoyed on the rocks or added to cocktails that need an extra hint of sweetness with a kick.
