Kaaimansgat Vineyard
Situated in the Elandskloof Valley near Villiersdorp, Kaaimansgat Vineyard boasts unique terroir. Planted in 2008 at 700 meters above sea level, the vineyard enjoys a dramatic setting surrounded by tall mountains. The soil here is a fascinating blend of shale origin with a significant granite component in the topsoil and a clay subsoil. This unique combination creates ideal conditions for optimal grape ripening.
Vintage 2023
The 2023 vintage was exceptional, characterized by ideal conditions for fruit set and ripening. This resulted in a wine that is both graceful and poised. Silky, medium-grained tannins are beautifully balanced by refreshing acidity, creating a sense of tension and remarkable lightness on the palate.
Winemaking
Grapes are meticulously hand-picked and sorted. Following a cold soak, spontaneous fermentation takes place. Post-fermentation maceration continues until optimal tannin extraction is achieved. The wine then undergoes 10 months of maturation in 228-liter French oak barrels, with a judicious blend of 26% new oak and older barrels.
Tasting Notes
This wine offers a captivating aromatic profile with notes of mixed red and dark berries, rose hip, and a subtle lift of cocoa. The unique orange rind character, a hallmark of this vineyard’s terroir, is distinctly present. On the palate, flavors of red and black cherries unfold alongside umami notes and roasted chestnuts. The silky, medium-grained tannins are seamlessly integrated with balanced acidity, promising further complexity as the wine ages.
