Fortified

Fortified wines are made by the process of fortification – when wine is strengthened by the addition of a distilled spirit, typically brandy. This process, dating back centuries, increases the alcohol content which preserved the wine for long sea voyages. The colour and taste depend on the type and ageing process used, and can range from dry and nutty (Sherry) to sweet and robust (Port).
